What’s the best way to look after teak garden furniture?
Teak is a dense, close-grained hardwood. It contains silica, which makes it resistant to fungal decay, water, rotting, warping, shrinking, swelling and many chemicals. It also contains naturally high levels of resinous oil that acts as an insect repellent and allows it to be resistant to moisture and the drying effects of weather. For this reason it doesn’t need to be treated with oil. As the teak furniture begins to weather it will turn an elegant silver-grey colour. However, if you want to keep the warm, rich tones you can apply teak oil or sealer from time to time.
How can I make sure the teak garden furniture I buy is made from 100% class 1 teak wood?
Often, garden furniture may be constructed from lower grades of teak and inferior quality hardwoods. These woods are not as durable; they are susceptible to wood worm and need to be treated regularly with exterior wood treatments if used outdoors. Always check with the manufacturer if you are in doubt.
