How to find well-made teak garden furniture

There are lots of companies selling teak garden furniture, but how do you sort the wheat from the chaff?

No-one wants to discover after they have spent a lot of money on something that it is not of the quality they thought it was when they bought it. It is no different if you are spending money on an item of teak garden furniture. The qualities of teak have made it very sought-after, so teak furniture is generally quite expensive.

Choosing teak furniture.

To make sure that you get the highest quality teak furniture you should look for specific things:

Customer service and product support
Before you make any purchases it’s important to find out about the company’s after care policy. For example, will you be given a care guideline with your furniture? If you are not satisfied with your purchase how soon will you have to return it and who pays the carriage?

Kiln-dried
Prior to construction teak wood must be kiln-dried rather than air dried. If it is dried precisely to an optimal moisture content of 8 - 10%, the furniture is dried to the core, which eliminates or reduces cracking, splitting, and warping for decades.

Build quality
Your teak garden furniture can made from the highest quality materials, but if it’s not put together properly, then it cannot be expected to last. There are three key elements to this:

  • Proper joinery -  this means using mortice and tenon joints which, if machined to the correct tolerances and secured with dowels of the same wood produce a very strong, durable joint which doesn’t need glue to add strength. Proper joinery also means that all parts and components must fit together closely; gaps, poor alignment, packing or filler should not be present in teak garden furniture which has been correctly machined to the appropriate tolerances.
  • Fittings and fastenings - Many models of teak garden furniture have adjustable backrests and moving parts. Brass is usually used for the exposed ends of these fastenings, because it looks better and it’s also resistant to corrosion.
  • Timber – Teak garden furniture is obviously much cheaper to make with thinner sections of timber, but it is less sturdy and may not stand up to the British climate and years of wear and tear. Check the thickness of the different components of a chair, for example – together they should be strong enough to take the weight of people of all different sizes.
